Would that for a couple of hours I had been a mouse at the edge of a table leg or a fly on the wall as yesterday President Elect Obama dined at the White House with all living former Presidents. This momentous lunch occasioned the first meeting since 1981 of all living Presidents. No doubt the conversation was a mixture of light-hearted banter and of serious discussion.
Mr. Obama is reported to have noted the extreme graciousness of President Bush and to attribute the smooth transition in great part to President Bush’s exceptionally fine attitude and helpfulness. All the former presidents have offered their services to Mr. Obama.
I honor all these men, and wish nothing but a successful and true presidency for Mr. Obama. Our country will soon depend on his leadership, on his integrity and on his judgment. Today I pray for him…and for us.
