Little Church in the Field

I had seen that tiny church set far into the distance from the highway, but we had never stopped until last week when we went into Yuma. It seats 12 people, was built by a gentleman in honor of his wife, and its entire service schedule consists of an Easter Sunrise Service.

Any of you tired from Sunday services? Might consider pastoring (or being a member of) this little gem–a year to plan a wonderful sermon, rehearse the choir, maintain the building, contact the previous Sunday’s visitors, schedule routine maintenance, promote attendance, and train staff. Let me know if you’re interested. I’ll post a note in the visitors book the next time I go by.

Jerry and an Army Shot

An Army Shot, originally uploaded by Shirley Buxton.

We’ve passed the place several times in our travels through Arizona, frequently saying as we traveled that we needed to stop. A couple of weeks ago we finally pulled in to take pictures of the two large guns at the US Army Proving Grounds–just a few miles outside of Yuma.

In Jerry’s Junior and Senior year at college he joined the ROTC, taking 60 units in Military Science; during his senior year he spent 6 weeks in active training at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. With only a slight difference, it was this type DSC_0002of weapon that he learned to operate during that time. So, of course, he was interested in taking a look, and of course, I was interested in the photography angle.

Jerry didn’t pursue a career with the military as many of you know; he resigned his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, and instead entered the ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Although I appreciate our military personnel, and honor and respect their service to our country, I must say I’m glad Jerry’s calling in life led him to be a preacher and not a soldier in the US Army. He’s a soldier all right–a soldier in the army of the Lord.

Fireworks Finale at Lake Havasu

Finale, originally uploaded by Shirley Buxton.

Chloe was worn out from senior camp and from our long trip back home, so she slept until after 10:00 yesterday. After solidifying our plans for the day, she and I went to Dillards…found awesome bargains. I’ll take pictures later and show you, but she found a couple of pairs of shoes for $9.95 each; one pair had been $100.00. We were ecstatic at such finds. Bought her a few tops, then back home, where after a bit of lunch, I sought out a napping spot!

At 6:00 we joined Dustin and his family at the lake, ate hamburgers, the girls swam, then around 9:00 began the fireworks display. It was gorgeous. Aren’t they always?

Love the shot at the top of this post. Look closely to the far right and you will see Chloe and her friends watching the display from within the cool waters of Lake Havasu. Click on the picture, where over on Flickr you can see the picture in a larger size.

Bokeh Visits the 4th by you.
