Is the Newsweek Cover Offensive?

She was a parasitic twin, born with four legs and four arms, and the Indian villagers worshipped her as a god, for one of their many gods was one with multiple arms and legs. She attracted the attention of the world when her plight was discovered by a caring doctor who arranged for a risky operation to remove her extra limbs. I wrote extensively about Lakshimi here. (In that post are other links, including one to a video about this charming little girl.)

Now, another incident has arisen concerning Indian gods with multiple limbs. This one has come about because of a cover of Newsweek magazine that makes a connection between President Obama and their  multi-limbed deity. Many Hindus are offended.

Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism in Nevada, told the English-language Sify News in India that Nataraja is highly revered and meant to be worshipped, not indecorously thrown around. Zed, who is known for his work on interfaith dialogue, said it is not OK to use Hindu concepts and symbols for profit or self-serving purposes.

The accompanying article is intended to show the job of President is so daunting, it is difficult for one man to do alone, but how that translates to “god of all things” is puzzling.  Perhaps Newsweek is hinting at the ‘need’ for an even larger, more intrusive and tyrannical government.  Remember, this is the magazine that declared, “We are all socialists now“.

I really don’t know what to make of this. Have you thought about it? Is Newsweek deliberately trying to offend the Hindus? Should Hindus be offended? I’d like to hear your thoughts.
