Unbelievable Steak Knife Caper

Expected is that the majority of people who read my writings easily discern my right-wing leanings, my belief in moral absolutes, my high regard for life from its inception, my conviction of Biblical inerrancy, and my idea that we should obey the laws of the land. Frequently, I also meddle in the arena of common sense.

Yesterday I heard of an incident that is grossly lacking in said trait:

OCALA, Fla. — A 10-year old Ocala girl brought her lunch to school and a small kitchen knife to cut it. She now faces a felony charge after being arrested. The school and the sheriff’s office disagree on the reason for the arrest.

School officials say the 5th grader was brown-bagging it. She brought a piece of steak for her lunch, but she also brought a steak knife. That’s when deputies were called.

It happened in the cafeteria at Sunrise Elementary School. The 10-year-old used the knife to cut the meat.”She did not use it inappropriately. She did not threaten anyone with it. She didn’t pull it out and brandish it. Nothing of that nature,” explained Marion County School Spokesman Kevin Christian. But a couple of teachers took the utensil and called the sheriff. When deputies arrived, they were unable to get the child’s parents on the phone, so they arrested her and took her to the county’s juvenile assessment center.

This is nuts.

Mervi – Just maybe you haven’t ran across a professor that Brian and Bryce both had at CSUB. Brian filed complaints. In fact, he finally wrote what she wanted and put a disclaimer on the bottom of the paper stating it was not his thoughts or opinions.

AH Sis. Jana who are “THEY”?

I would like to question parts of your last comments. I am a little more the half way through my Master’s Thesis. Yes mum, I have met more than one instructor with preconceived ideas. Yes mum, I have challenged them. No mum it has not, to this point affect my final grades. They must grade you for the work completed. Yes, with a little use of prudence, I have followed their line of teaching. However when give the opportunity to write at will, they must grade me on the substance and correctness of my paper, not if it agree or not with my approach to the subject matter.

I will express a personal option:

Our youth need to be taught how to deal with the type of instructors that dominate the halls of upper education.

Mervi – your last sentence is, in my opinion, the goal. “They” don’t want us to think but rather follow ignorantly. This explains why America is “dumbing-down.” Professors at universities teach their opinion and if you write against their position, you fail the class. God forbid a student to have an idea other than the professor! (said tongue in cheek)

Good morning Sis Buxton and others;

I read this story and dropped my head and shook it till it hurt.
Zero tolerance, is a pencil a weapon? How about a finger nail file? Zero tolerance for drugs? Coffee, let alone what Starbucks puts into a cup of coffee? How about those standing around smoking?
Somewhere someone must come forward and establish a zone for common since, a place where a little thinking is employed. All ZERO TOLERANCE does, in my never to be humble option, it removes the idea or the need for thinking!

Good morning, ANITA–welcome to my blog. Hope you’re here often.

Our schools are sadly lacking and in serious trouble.

PAULYN–good to hear from you again. Outrageous is the right word.

Merry Christmas to both of you.

Poor child! What a traumatic experience this is for a 10-year-old! She probably wasn’t even aware that it’s against the law to do such a thing. I think that they should have informed the child that she did something wrong before having her arrested and charged for felony…. an unknowing, innocent child charged for felony… that’s absolutely outrageous, isn’t it?

Calling the police was certainly “over-kill,” considering the animal the child was cutting for her lunch was already dead.

But, seriously, if the educators are completely lacking in common sense, what does this teach the children?

R Guy and Arm 5, I understand your pointing out the school’s dilemma, because of their zero tolerance for weapons and violence.

It seems though, that common sense would have the teacher merely take away the knife and remind the child of school policy. There was no point in calling the police.

Thanks for your opinions.

I feel sorry for the littli girl.In this case the school overreacted. But if the school has a policy of zero tolerance for weapons or violence then they were doing there job. I beileve the parent should have used better judgement in packing a steak knife in their daugthers lunch. She may have using it to cut her steak. But if another student had of picked up that knife and used it on another student.

The school overreacted, however they are kind of stuck. With violence such a problem in schools, they must be vigilant.

They could have confiscated the knife and warned her not to bring such a thing again.

Unreal!!! In the mean time, the ones holding a knife with ill intentions walk freely among us.
It’s all backwards – sign of the times. Seems the phrase has been used so much, but it’s true.

Hi, Catherine. Thanks for your comment and concern.
