Warning! Deadly Water Fountains

What?, originally uploaded by Shirley Buxton.

On Highway 40, as we headed toward Lake Havasu, we pulled our rig into a rest stop; the first one east of Barstow. It was my turn to drive, but before I “took the wheel,” I spent a few minutes getting in a little leg stretch. When I saw the scene pictured here, I stared for a few minutes, then went to the motor home for my camera.

As you can see, at this lovely rest stop are beautiful water fountains; actually there are two, one situated a bit higher than the other. They are fine water fountains—appearing to be polished stainless steel. Only one problem: According to the sign posted over them, those lovely water fountains—the only ones I was able to find at this rest stop—are full of non-potable water. Our parched throats will not be soothed here—can’t drink the stuff.

I turned the knobs to see if indeed the fountains work, and yes, clear looking water gushed from each of them. A lady passed by, I caught her eye, and we smirked together.

Still full of life and ready to be on the move, Shirley at 81 years old feels blessed to have lots of energy and to be full of optimism. She was married to Jerry for 64 years, and grieves yet at his death in August of 2019. They have 4 children, 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren...all beautiful and highly intelligent--of course. :)
