Historic Mansion For Sale on Ebay

May 25, 2006 · 88 Comments

SPECIAL NOTE FROM SHIRLEY: To fully enjoy this piece, you must read all the comments. Gotta read the Digg article, first. :)

___________________
Check out this piece of history that is currently selling on ebay. ___________________

It probably is a good thing this fantastic looking piece of property is located completely across the country from Jerry and me. Should I say to him tonight, "Honey, what would you think of moving to New York state?" he would swing around in his chair and stare at my face, looking for obvious or hidden signs of insanity. No, this deal is not for me, but it surely is a tempting one, and strongly appealing to me, even as I understand it is foolish to even entertain such a thought.

Through the years, I have mulled over the idea of owning a historic house. We never seriously considered buying one, for although such houses appeal to both of us, I believe, we knew how much labor and money would be necesary to invest in an aged house.

Old houses appeal to me, but the restoration and maintenance of such a house probably should be relegated to young people. Tonight my knees are sore and one of my hips is gimpy just from digging around in flower beds today and from raking up bags of leaves and thousands of acorns.

So, the house is safe from me…but available for you. At least go to digg and look at all the pictures. This is a 21 room Queen Anne Victorian house, with 13 bedrooms, and 6 baths. It was built in 1865. There is no reserve and it will absolutely be sold to the highest bidder. As I write this, the highest bid is just over $30,000.00. Go for it!

    Let’s go halves, Shirley! :-) ;-)

  • Shirley // May 25, 2006 at 8:20 pm

Now, that is a deal that will be hard to pass.
    Have a good night. :)

  • Carol // May 25, 2006 at 9:05 pm

Unbelievable! My husband was born and raised in Binghamton. We lived there from 1986 until May of 1989 when we moved out to California. My mother-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law still live in Binghamton. Real estate is cheap there compared to California, but Binghamton has become pretty run down. My husband is looking at the mansion right now on his computer. Not to worry, we have no desire to move back East.

    Contented Carol in California

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 4:56 am

Carol, Go thirds with Helen and me. :)

  • Helen Losse // May 26, 2006 at 5:37 am

Come on, Carol. Shirley’s right. It’s up to 33, 400, so we better count on fifteen thou apiece. :)

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 5:53 am

I know what. Every person who is a regular visitor to this site–blogger or not–could join with the purchase and we could have a central headquarters in Binghamton. Have reunions, cookouts, philosophy fights, discussions of borders, fences, national languages, sweet President Bush :) etc. (Be nice now, everybody.)

What say you who visit here?

  • danielcomstock // May 26, 2006 at 6:06 am

$30,000 omg that is a really low price i mean really that is a low price r u goin to bid on it shirley

  • Helen Losse // May 26, 2006 at 6:19 am

    Hi Daniel,

See all the smiley faces. This is all one big joke. :-)

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 6:38 am

Why, Daniel. We were waiting to hear from you and expect you to join us and be a 1/4 owner.:)

However, my ever advancing ideas are multiplying and I now believe this mansion should not only be a meeting place for participants of my blog, Daniel’s, Helen’s, and Carol’s, but of all of WordPress. Come on, Matt. Join us. Someone needs to let him know of this, today’s finest challenge and opportunity for WordPress.

Can’t you see it now. We’ll have a grand opening, invite all the neighbors, the mayor, New York Senators, (including Hillary, I suppose,) e-bay executives, the former owners of the mansion, our families–especially Carol’s husband and his relatives who already have homes there–and…may President Bush come?

  • Phil Gerbyshak // May 26, 2006 at 7:00 am

Count me in! I’ll bring the wine!

  • Shawnna // May 26, 2006 at 7:05 am

Good morning. I don’t want to be a party pooper here, but I would strongly recommend that if anyone is serious about this house that they consider the person’s feedback on eBay. Just a thought since I have checked it out and felt a couple of tiny red flags go up. Alrighty…. have a great day!

  • Ellen // May 26, 2006 at 7:14 am

I love it! I bought an old house (without this much character) – this was pre-gray hair discovery! We tried for 4 years to make it quaint and precious.

We now live in a 3 bedroom ranch ;)

    Peace

  • Helen Losse // May 26, 2006 at 7:18 am

No not Bush. I’m afraid he and Hillary would make the whole event too political. And she was on the list first. I was thinking more in the line of sack races and softball. Who has ice cream makers? We’ll need as many as we can get. On second thought, maybe Laura has one, in which case we’ll reconsider Bush. Only I think we need to be adamant about resticting the speeches to a designated area. No preaching in the pool either, unless you bring a water proof Bible. Check Walmart. They have most of what everyone needs, but don’t buy it if it was printed in China.

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 7:37 am

This party is rolling. Everybody, please invite all bloggers you know.

I think we must include Blogspot people, too, for I have already invited some.

    Love you all,

    Shirley

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 7:40 am

Helen, you are a hoot, but you have great ideas, and I agree that we must designate one area as the speech room. Everybody now, post your plans for the party and invite everybody, but they must check in here.

Shawnna, my dear. I neglected to say that we are assigning one whole floor to everybody's children and grandchildren. The Bush twins and Chelsea are already designated to serve as nannies. And we'll have enough Democrats there, that if we run into any serious problems with the mansion, we can quickly raise taxes to cover it all.:)

  • Carol // May 26, 2006 at 8:14 am

Wow! This is great! My husband told his mom a few years ago that he would not want to move back to Binghamton because he might die of boredom. However, if it’s going to be a place with all of you wonderful people, a swimming pool and a waterproof Bible, he just might be enticed to move back East! Imagine, all of us together in a glorious old mansion. We’d be the new kids on the blog! :-)

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 8:25 am

Carol, I know. It is a wonderful development. I can just feel the excitement building around the world. :) Someone needs to contact the Binghamton newspaper and let them know of the global and blogosphere interest in their fine town. Certainly hubby needs to warn his relatives of the avalanche of people that is ready to pounce on them. :)

The National Council of Churches will no doubt also be intrigued. Why, this will be the first church with a pulpit in the swimming pool. Or did Helen say that? She absolutely did mention a water-proof Bible, so we must consider finding a water-proof pulpit. Not sure about Walmart for that, but someone out there will know where to find what we need.

  • Dawn // May 26, 2006 at 9:12 am

I’m only in if I can bring my cat.

  • Helen Losse // May 26, 2006 at 9:19 am

Try http://www.godsimportant&highlyspiritualwatertools.com. They’re kind of expensive but you can count on them for all kinds of spiritual aids. Might want to pick up a few beach balls, so we don’t accidently get the carnal kind! You can imagine how devestating that might be, especially with all the young people at an event of this magnitude. We don’t want to leave room for anyone to say anything silly about us. ;-)

  • MorningGlory // May 26, 2006 at 9:20 am

Thanks for the invite, Shirley. I left that part of the country 22 years ago and moved down south. I think I’ll just stay put for now.

    MG

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 9:24 am

Cats are welcome, of course. I'll engage my neighbor Nancy to care for all the animals. Her two cats are so pampered, their little paws have never touched earth.

On second thought, perhaps Al Gore should be in charge of all nature's gifts. :)

  • Robin // May 26, 2006 at 9:34 am

Thanks for the invite Shirley. Been to Binghamton. The house looks “interesting”. How is that for a PC answer? LOL! Think I’ll stay put here in New England!

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 10:22 am

Helen, it's mind-boggling that you would consider anyone thinking today's communication silly. Be warned: Your new business http://www.godshighlyimportantandspiritualwatertools will be quite lucrative, and you may grow rich. It fills a certain need and niche.

Morning Glory, please reconsider and join us. It is not for year-round-living. Just vacations and special meetings. We will have a full time staff to care for the mansion funded from money that Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling stole.

Robin, read answer to Morning Glory. And yes, you have mastered PC talk.

TAKE NOTE ALL CITIZENS: Matt of WordPress has been here, not talking, only lurking. But we will forgive him, for no doubt he immediately, on hearing of this opportunity, rushed into secret sessions with THE REST OF THEM, whoever they are, and they are doubtless at this moment planning their strategy. Of a surety, they have already bid on ebay. Stay tuned for further developments.

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 10:39 am

I have to leave the house now, so I am placing Helen in charge of the ongoing New York mansion party plans. Helen, you’ll just have to give up on the kitchen remodel for today. I’m sure your husband will be quite understanding.

If you get in a bind, turn the job over to Carol. All she does anyway is homeschool her youngsters and act as a pastor’s wife. She should have plenty of time to keep the party rolling.

You may call on Daniel if you need any errands run.

    Later…:)

  • Helen Losse // May 26, 2006 at 10:49 am

Oh, I don’t think it’s silly. Just wanted to cover all the bases. Too bad I don’t own that site. Speaking of lurking, wonder if we should invite members of the FBI and CIA? They know a lot about bugs, I heard, and could, perhaps, be of help to Gore. The Secret Servic will already be there, if Bush comes. And BTW, maybe we can get a lobby in Washington so any expenses not already covered would qualify for a tax break. Who do we know that could do that while the Republicans still have abit of clout? Come to think of it, Shirley, have we set a date for the Grand Opening? Anyone have a helium machine? We’ll need balloons! I cn’t think of everything, Shirley, but the kitchen’s definitely on hold. :)

  • Liz Strauss // May 26, 2006 at 10:58 am

Wow! Shirley, I had no idea that you had such things going on. But where are the handsome Italians, the Aussies, and the rest of folks who’ll teach us how to speak another language while sitting by the pool swatting those New England mosquitoes?

  • Carol // May 26, 2006 at 11:16 am

    Helen,

Please let me know if you do need help. I’m sure I could squeeze this in somewhere between meal preparations, laundry, cleaning and helping the children. This, after all, is an all important matter on which could determine the fate of the blogging community.

  • Helen Losse // May 26, 2006 at 11:54 am

Oh, yes, Carol, I’ll be calling on you. Do you know anything about preping a site for Porta-John intallation? I hope we can get that settled, while Shirley’s lolly-gagging around, shirking her duty. Leaving us without even her cell number. Why the very idea. She would do that if she were a Methodist, would she?

  • Kerri // May 26, 2006 at 1:11 pm

Thanks for the invite! :) Alaska is a bit far from New York, though!

  • Helen Losse // May 26, 2006 at 1:34 pm

Not to worry. Someone’s sure to have a dog sled.

  • blair // May 26, 2006 at 2:14 pm

Wow! That would be such an awesome place to live! How fun!

  • danielcomstock // May 26, 2006 at 2:18 pm

i can not be a owner i am 12 lol

  • Mariah D'Anjolie // May 26, 2006 at 2:36 pm

    Hi Shirley!

I’ll gladly do the redecoration for the new owner!

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 3:19 pm

Well, everyone has done a remarkable job keeping the party rolling while I was out and about on extremely important business. At 4:17 pm Pacific time, the bid on our mansion is $33,634.00. Haven't heard from Matt, yet.

Mariah, we'll keep your business card on file.

Helen, in this situation, having always been a Pentecostal, I'm not sure what I would do if I were a Methodist. Probably do right by everybody. :)

  • Becky // May 26, 2006 at 3:40 pm

The husband is looking at places south for retirement, Shirley, but thanks for the invite. Sounds like the way you all would do it up, it would be a fun place to visit!

  • John O // May 26, 2006 at 3:50 pm

Hmmm…I actually have the money! But it would require a trip, and some serious life-thought.

    Thanks for inviting me!

  • mosaik // May 26, 2006 at 3:51 pm

Thanks for the invite to the party Shirley. So am I going to be your crazy ex-pat Kiwi from Australia with my weird multicultural background who teaches you all the Queen’s English? Inbetween mosaicking the front steps of course ;) .You are taking a risk though – what would the neighbours think of a Polynesian Aboriginal theme heavily influenced by Gaudi and Hundertwasser?!!!

  • thervas // May 26, 2006 at 4:29 pm

Hi. But what did you comment me? I am invited to what exactly?

  • thervas // May 26, 2006 at 4:30 pm

ah, ok, I see now. Sorry but Alaska is way out of my range, thanks for the invite though.

  • thervas // May 26, 2006 at 4:32 pm

By alaska I mean New York :P

  • Juicy // May 26, 2006 at 4:48 pm

  • vjp // May 26, 2006 at 4:48 pm

Hi Shirley! Thanks for the invite but it’s just too cold in NY for me. Think I’ll stay where I am – a little further south where the winters are mild.

  • Father Joe // May 26, 2006 at 4:48 pm

    Mansion on Asbury Court
    http://www.bnbfinder.com/?action=printInn&innId=15881

It is listed all over the web as a Bed-and-Breakfast place, and recently renovated. It was listed as such as recently as April this year.

Something does not add up. The seller claims he is not from NY and just wants to get rid of it. But “Ebay” is just too wild. It is possible that he will work through a dummy at the last hour to bid a higher price so as to save his skin. It seems to be a valuable piece of property.

He says there are no liens against the title, but I wonder if the buyer might have to assume losses from the prior business?

The placed is also clearly registered as historical. That can be a real pain. Any repairs or improvements have to be approved and nothing can be done to detract from the historical appearance. That means, sometimes, that modern materials cannot be used for windows, roofs, etc. It may also impact upon the guts of the house.

He says that there is no garage. I bet the historical people will not allow additional structures to be built.

    Peace

  • Helen Losse // May 26, 2006 at 4:52 pm

Thank heaven you’re back, Shirley. The pressure of leading in your stead was starting to get to me. :-)

  • Father Joe // May 26, 2006 at 4:58 pm

    HERE IS MORE INFORMATION:

Joanne and Steven Austin bought a dilapidated mansion at 9 Asbury Court in Binghamton about
10 years ago, with hopes of restoring it to its old glory and transforming it into a Victorian bed-and-breakfast.

But after years of pouring money into The Mansion on Asbury Court and facing mounting debt and minimal income from the bed-and-breakfast, the couple were forced to file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy protection in March 2004.

IN OTHER WORDS, YOU MIGHT BUY THE PLACE FOR A SONG, BUT IT WILL END UP A BOTTOMLESS PIT FOR YOUR SAVINGS.

  • Lou (Linda) // May 26, 2006 at 5:48 pm

Just got your invite to this party. Looks like it’s been going on for some time without me! Helen: strong work in keeping it going in the absence of Shirley there for awhile! I’m in on this one! I’ll pay for Daniel’s fourth, since he’s only 12. I can see us all sitting around the porch on Adirondack chairs IMing to each other on our wireless laptops. A speech room?? Will any of us know how to communicate without a computer? :-) My cat, Mew Ling, says she’ll come, too, but only if she gets her own room…

  • landismom // May 26, 2006 at 6:42 pm

I can’t move to Binghamton, it’s too close to my relatives, but thanks for the invite!

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 6:55 pm

What a great group of bloggers have chanced by here today or was lured by my promises, or was dragged to this site kicking and screaming! Thank you–each of you.

Let me think through my responses to you now.

Helen, although I could tell the pressure was getting to you, we could not have made it today without your overseeing this group. We’re eternally grateful. I know Carol indicated she was ready to jump in at any moment she was needed, but with your great strength and presence of mind, you single-handedly kept the charge.

Bless Daniel’s heart–he’s worried about being too young to own property–may not have the money, even–but Linda is forking over his share…if we find a place for Mew Ling. I will check with Dawn and see if her cat and Mew Ling could possibly share a room.

Becky and Vjp are only coming in for summer visits, so that should work out fine. We’ll have iced lemonade ready for their arrivals.

I believe we have a winner in Mosaik, but I’m not quite sure what to do with him. First of all, I must visit Wikipedia. We’ll get back with you, Mosaik. :)

Thervas is one I lured here. He staggered in, befuddled, but finally found his way.

John, I understand that you have plenty of money, so if we run short, we will remember you.

Juicy did not tell me so, but she was probably hurt because I did not make the invitation clear. I have comforted her on her site.

And finally, Father Joe. Thank you for being so concerned for us and demonstrating such a sweet dermination to prevent us from making a drastic mistake. When Matt contacts me, I will directly point him to you.

    until later…

  • Shirley // May 26, 2006 at 6:59 pm

Understand, Landismom. But if you ever feel quite adventurous, contact one of us, and we will sneak you in under cover of dark, wearing a black cloak, and with your face veiled. :)

  • Chris // May 26, 2006 at 8:02 pm

Wow. Someone’s going to make a mint writing a novel about this. This whole idea has NYT Best Seller written all over it. I’m thinking “Mixed Nuts” has a nice ring to it.

Shoot. Now that I’ve told you my idea, it’ll be a race to the publishers…gotta go!

  • Ben Rowe // May 26, 2006 at 10:39 pm

    Great idea Shirley!

I’m looking foward to going back to Australia, so it will be a little too far away for me. I’d love up drop in some time though.

    Hello Shirley!

I’m afraid Singapore is a bit too far away, and I don’t think school would permit me to come over for this grand occasion. ;)

Nevertheless, thank you for the invite. I reckon the party has already started here though!

    Much love.

  • Aurora // May 27, 2006 at 6:39 am

Wow what a cool idea…I see things like that and it makes me wish I wasnt so poor all the time. I am lucky to have the 4 room cottage I rent and share with my daughter.

  • Ben Rowe // May 27, 2006 at 7:08 am

    Shirley,

I just noticed you’re are one of the fastest growing wordpress blogs today. Perhaps your idea will go full steam ahead now. Good luck.

  • Shirley // May 27, 2006 at 7:51 am

Good morning, everybody…or afternoon…or evening, depending on where you are. Isn’t this a riot? When I posted that little Digg article, I never expected such as this. It must be because we are all such dynamic creature with the creative juice fairly flowing. :)

Yes, Ben, I noticed that too. Thanks to all of you.

  • bechalem // May 27, 2006 at 8:35 am

Thanks Shirley, that is a great deal but I am going to pass on. Binghamton is not my kind of place even at that price. Txs anyways.

  • Shirley // May 27, 2006 at 8:38 am

Well, Bechalem, we’ll save room for you on our visitor roster. Thanks for coming by.

  • silfrenwulf // May 27, 2006 at 12:38 pm

Thanks for the invite but there’s the most enormous pond in between the property and I, which would make things a bit difficult for me, lol.

  • Shirley // May 27, 2006 at 12:59 pm

Of course, Ilerick, wear formal for the grand opening. The dress you describe sounds dynamic. Casual things afterward, though.

    Pus, keep saving.

Silfrenwulf, that pond gets us everytime we want to do something adventurous.

  • Shirley // May 27, 2006 at 8:05 pm

Hey, AP. Does Buxton Interiors know you have volunteered their services?

Laura, I thought surely you could donate a rug or a throw piece for one of the rooms. Think about it.

  • AP // May 27, 2006 at 8:37 pm

When I notified them (after the post) they seemed extremely excited about it!

  • fourcrows // May 28, 2006 at 5:13 am

I didn’t see the link yesterday…I’m somewhat comatose at times….This place is gorgeous!! I think I need towatch ebay for my next house! I’m watching it in ebay now….Thanks Shirley! :)

  • edj // May 28, 2006 at 6:00 am

Wow…i’ve been out of the country too long. I didn’t even know you could buy houses on ebay. I think the price is right. I’ll definitely come to the party–hey this is cyberspace, right? What’s a little pond or two between? And I’m looking forward to chatting with all the political “luminaries” you’re inviting as well. I have some definite opinions I’d love to share with them all–although perhaps that’s not fair at a party, and I should limit myself to commenting on their tans or cute sandals, asking about summer plans, etc.

  • Shirley // May 28, 2006 at 7:45 am

AP, I’m afraid that engaging Buxton Interiors would smack of nepotism…especially if we paid out lots of money. I noticed your original post said nothing of volunteer work from that highbrow company.

Also, AP, I am deeply hurt and properly offended in that I have seen no offers from Kastlekon Construction.

  • Shirley // May 28, 2006 at 8:03 am

I have failed in proper acknowledgments to the following people, and herewith redeem myself:

Chris, just what do you mean by “mixed nuts?”

Ben Rowe and Living Journey, you’ll probably wind up neighbors in Australia. If you can’t make it for the grand opening, throw a neighborhood bash, with wide screens set up on front lawns to utilize satellite pictures. (Surely CNN will cover the event…or perhaps Fox will).

Yes, YP, we accept your offer, for we don’t have anyone for Mandarin and Malay. Liz Strauss, in particular was concerned about language lessons. Someone let her know that we have several lined up now.

Anna, I agree that Singapore is a bit of a distance. Think about this. For your graduation, treat yourself to a trip to the WordPress Mansion.

Aurora, don’t give up your cottage, nor your daughter. Just come for a visit. Recall that one of the floors is set aside for children and we’ve already engaged the Bush twins and Chelsea as nannies. Your daughter will be in fine hands.

Agring, that you can’t afford it is no problem at all. Plenty of grants and social services available.

Tracifish, I was worried about you for awhile. Glad you’re in.

Fourcrows, I’m relieved that you found the link and have joined us.

Edg, can’t wait to meet you. You are a champ with shrewd understanding that small ponds are nothing in the light of the exceptional opportunity to engage with such political luminaries as we are expecting. Check with me. We may put you in charge of our Rose Garden, but I’ll have to check with Helen first.

    Cheers.

  • Liz Strauss // May 28, 2006 at 9:01 am

    Thanks Shirley,
For worrying about everyone’s concerns. I’ve been thinking about the language lessons, especially since I work on writing and grammar books. I’m thinking that we should just declare the house a new country and make up a language of our own!

    smiles,
    Liz Strauss

  • Ghosty // May 28, 2006 at 10:42 am

Goodness, I’d love to get in on this … but I have *no money whatsoever*, having just moved into a shared house in Alexandria, VA and haven’t even started my new job as yet.

Thanks for the invite, though. Don’t neglect to consider the property taxes on a place like that. :-O

  • Shirley // May 28, 2006 at 6:13 pm

Liz, ever hear of the Tower of Babel?

Ghosty, no one has applied yet, but we do have scholarships available. Check with Helen for an application. And yes, the taxes are steep, but we have an attorney checking into loopholes so that we won’t pay any taxes.

Thanks. We must keep informed. It only occured to me, Tena, that you may not have received a personal invitation. I’m extending one now to you and your family, for this is such a grand opportunity. We will set aside space designated The Magic Room :) Let me know if you want a reservation.

    Love you.

If you want to buy this as a “time share”, count me in. My father lives about 60 miles from Binghamton (and my sister and her husband are even closer) and I’d LOVE to have a place to stay as a “base of operations”.

It would be a GREAT place to go for a couple of weeks during the summer. It gets to 100+ here in the summer, and the cooler weather would be a treat.

Bear, is it cooler in Binghamton? cooler than where….?

Thank you! We’d love to come! I’m assuming you want to set aside a Magic Room because of Kyle’s show? Well… we’ll have to change that room to a “Music” room, now. If the boys come, they’ll want to play their instruments. Although, it’ll be switching back and forth from jazz (Todd) to rock (Kyle). Also, you’ll have to promise a game of Rook with you, Bro. Buxton, Andrew, Shawnna, Rebecca, Len, and me. Is it a deal?
    Love you, too!

It’s a deal. Let the party roll. Remember the flags!

Liz, ever hear of the Tower of Babel? :)

    Shirley,
I wasn’t saying go with our own languages. I was thinking we should make up a brand new one — Blogglish or Blogglian — the language of bloggers who party in old mansions purchased for a song on ebay.

    I vote for Blogglian–has a nice ring.
